Although barn owls can gather their own nesting material, a bag of pine shavings is included to make the box more appealing to the owls. The exterior of the box has been treated with natural linseed oil to protect the wood from the elements.

Underneath the elliptical-shaped entrance hole, there is a newly added platform that extends 7 inches out from the nesting box, wrapping around the front and sides. This platform serves as a landing area for owlets that are learning to fly, preventing them from falling out of the box. It also allows adult barn owls to guide the owlets back into the box if they are not yet ready to venture out.

The box is equipped with ventilation holes to regulate the temperature and prevent the owls from overheating during the warmer months.
